About Me
History
Well, as you probably know already my name is Nicholas Edwards, but I prefer to be called Nick. From my birth in 1989 until I left home to go to university in 2006 I lived in a small village in the West of Scotland.
I was always interested in computers and was a child that grew up at the same time that computers and the Internet were becoming readily available in the home. I remember the first time speaking to a teacher in my early years of high school about what I wanted to do with my life and my answer was pretty straightforward: "I want to create websites for people". A year later at the same kind of "career meeting" I hadn't changed my mind, by this time I had looked into HTML and CSS and learned how to create a basic website; web design fascinated me and still does to this day.
School didn't teach me much in the way of web design but it did teach me a lot about non web related programming languages. Looking back on this now I feel that it taught me a lot of valuble information about programming fundimentals which helped me a lot when I started to learn HTML, CSS and other web related programming languages online in my spare time.
My fascination with web design grew from that time onwards and in early 2005 I came across Myspace which allowed me to express myself by creating profile layouts (a lot of which can be seen at a website I created to showcase them all - Free Div Layouts). I even started a Myspace group to create layouts for other people on request. Although the coding wasn't "good practice" in programming terms it still taught me a lot of useful skills, especially when manipulating existing layouts via CSS.
Early 2006 I was contacted by John Pospisil via Myspace about my group for creating layouts. He was in the process of writing a book about Myspace customization and wanted my help on how to create "div layouts" to complete a chapter and in return I would be acknowledged in the publication; Hacking Myspace - Mods and Customizations to make Myspace your Space. For this he uses one of my pre-made layouts as an example in the book and then proceeds to explain how to customize my layout into the layout the user wants to create.
I kept in touch with John via email after the book was published and from August 2008 until July 2009 he hired me to write a weekly blog post at Myspace is my Place (the blog associated with the Hacking Myspace book) about Myspace and other social networks.
At the end of summer 2006 I left home and moved to Dundee where I started studying Web Design & Development at The University of Abertay. From the start of university until now I have worked on improving my web design skills and have started to build up a portfolio of my work either from university coursework I considered good enough to put in here or from the occasional freelance work I have recieved.
This Portfolio Site
The idea behind this portfolio layout was just to keep it clean and simple. I wanted a design that would be easy to navigate, easy on the eyes, have fewer graphics on the layout (so the other projects would stand out) and have a little interactivity but at the same time be accessible.
I went through 3 or 4 designs on paper before deciding upon one. From the time it took me to create the layout in Adobe Photoshop my ideas had developed even further and so the layout changed even more (which is a problem while designing a site for yourself) into what you can see before you now.

How much do I charge?
This depends entirely on the requirements and the project. I would like to think that my prices are not the cheapest and are not the most expensive but rather are very reasonable for the quality of my work. Depending on the project I either charge per hour, per day or by quoting a one off fee for the entire project.
