Business Cards Anyone?

The other day (I say the other day, it was a good week ago now) someone asked me for a business card. You might not see this as an abnormal event, but this isn’t something that has happened to me before and was a little unexpected given the circumstances. Okay, so the person was probably not a potential employer or even someone who would likely hire me freelance, instead it was someone being friendly at a new years party. Basically he asked what I did, I said I was a web designer and he asked if I had a business card. I didn’t. He then said something along the lines of “Your a web designer, surely you should have a business card or something…”.

Apart from being a strangely short conversation, it also got me thinking (well, got me thinking the next day about it – it was new year, which is no time for business), I should probably design myself a business card. I have a portfolio website, I have a business email address, why not a business card? Well the answer to that is probably that it’s just not something I have thought about much before now, and it’s not really something I have needed in the past (although would be nice to have).

Long story short, I designed one. I’m not sure if I like it though (like with almost everything I create). Well, here it is:

This isn’t something I spent a lot of time on, I only looked at a few other people’s business cards (people that I know). After looking at a few I decided it would be a good idea to come up with something on my own. I will have to play around a bit with the font used and maybe with the black background too (I might put a subtle pattern on it), refine it a bit before I do anything more (i.e. get some printed).

Now, the reason there are three images up there is that I want a section of the business card to be white so that I can write on it – for example if I want to write my phone number or address on there (depending on who I was giving it to of course). The only problem is that I hate how the card looks with the white section at the top. So unless I blend it in somehow to make it look like it should be there (a ripped section? Would that look right?) then I really don’t want to keep it, but then I am stuck with where I can write on the card, and I want to be able to write on it.

I might just design a new one. I liked this one when I created it the other day, then looked at it today and didn’t like it as much. It was only a quick design in the first place but it didn’t turn out all that bad.

Anyway, any comments about the business card are more than welcome below, or even if you want to show off your own business card it would be appreciated (I find it very interesting looking at work by other people).

Project 52

Oh, and if your following my project52 progress then I’m switching my plan about a bit, it’ll now be like so:

  1. Inspirational post
  2. Something random – possibly a discussion about web design techniques (a different one each month)
  3. Web Design resources (I may even start making my own)
  4. What I’ve done this month

I may still change it about, I get very indecisive about these things. It might just end up being a “I’ll stick to the structure if I want to” kind of thing, but if I have something better to post then I will.

  1. ive got a couple of ideas:

    1. keep the black background. carry a white/silver pen on u.
    2. might as well swap the white bits to shiny silver, it’d look pretty cool. still carry a silver pen on u.
    3. if u still wanna stick to black/white and a normal pen i think u should make ur logo bigger on one side – actually too big to fit on the card – move it to the left hand side, so just about half of it would be visible. then u’d have enough white space to write on. hope u get what i meant.

  4. Yeah sorry, it got caught by the Akismit spam filter (probably because it had a few links in it). I should keep an eye on that in the future.

I get what you mean with the logo on the back. That might look better actually, and it’d give me space to write on if/when I want to.

Thanks for the links too :) a lot of them are more just nice because of what material they have been printed on though (and I’m not looking to spend stupid amounts of money on this, even if it does make it look that bit nicer – printed on card will work fine).
